Sharda hails from a Vaishnavite Iyengar family in Tamil Nadu. She obtained training in Sanskrit and vedic culture from her grand father who was an esteemed scholar in these subjects. She was drawn towards music from early childhood only and stared singing for school functions.
Later on it was on one such occasion that she sang in the presence of Shri Raj Kapoor, who was very impressed by her voice and offered to give her a chance to sing in his films. She gave her voice test in R. K. Studio and was sent to the great maestros Shankar-Jaikishan who groomed her and presented her in a great manner.
She sang under their baton in many films like, "Around the World in 8 Dollars", "Suraj", "Gumnaam", "Pyar Mohabbat", "Shatranj", "An Evening in Paris", "Gunahon Ka Devta", "Sapnon Ka Saudagar", "Ek Naari Ek Brahmachaari"and many others.
Her song "Titli Udi Ud Jo Chali" won many awards, including the prestigious Filmfare Award. Apart from this she had won many other awards and one more Filmfare Award for her song "Baat Zara Hai Apas Ki" from the film "Jahaan Pyaar Mile". Her songs have come in nominations for 3 consecutive years.
She has also sung under music directors Ravi, Usha Khanna, Iqbal Qureishi, N Dutta, Avinash Vyas and many others. She has sung in Marathi, Gujrati, Tamil, Telegu, Punjabi and also in English.
She has given music direction in movies like "Mandir Masjid', "Garibi Hatao", "Maila Aanchal", "Kshitij" and many others.
Now, she is bringing out a special entertaining cum educational musical activity program "Kid Music Zone" for children for the first time in India. A real treat for kids opening up a whole new world of music for tods and toons.......
